Should students be penalized for not attending class?

As a college student, my opinion on attendence policies is if you dont attend class your only penalty should be missing the lectures and not knowing the information for tests. The current attendance policies limit students to very little amount of missed classes and restrict our needed ability to sleep. As long as one does their hw and listens in class they should not have to attend as many classes.
